1800's Decorated Redware Pitcher

This 19th century redware pitcher is in primarily green salt glaze but does have a few places where some mustard yellow mottlement took place. The glaze stops short near the base of the jug and the underside isn't glazed at all. There is a chain-like glaze/slip decoration that extends from one side of the handle, all across the front of the piece and then back to the other side of the handle. It appears this decoration was first coated in a light colored glaze and then done again with some green.

This "belly pitcher" has some decorative incised rings and a fancy lip around the opening.  Dating from the 1880's, it shows age and has some very old chips around the opening and one on the bottom rim that have worn smooth and darkened with age. Such imperfectons are normal for this type of pottery because of how heavily used they were. It's just like it was the day we found it in the old cellar....still dusty and in need of a little cleaning. You can be assured you are getting an authentic piece from Countryside Antiques! It measures 9 3/4 inches high, has a 4 1/4 inch base diameter, and the opening measures 5 inches across, including the spout. This is a beautiful piece of early redware pottery that would look great on display anyplace you put it!
