Fabulous, 19th century redware pot with absolutely terrific green glaze with mottling! The predominant color is a dark green and the mottlling is a lighter, olive green color. Stunning to look at, this country pot is still filthy from sitting on a cellar shelf for generations. We like to sell our "finds" in the same condition we find them in. This pot will clean up nicely if so desired. It dates back to the 1860's or earl 1870's and was used as a food container. It was not considered a fancy piece back then and like other redware pots from this time, it was likely used often. These pots are very rare now because most were broken or seriously damaged due to the frequent use they saw. This one has three really old chips on the opening rim that have been worn smooth with use and the passage of time. Inside looks good but there are a few small spots where the glaze has eroded a bit. Such flaws are normal for 19th century redware...they help to distinguish the real thing from reproductions. The patina on this old pot tells the story....it is an authentic, Civil War Era pot.
